Make your family a biking family during the last two weekends in October. The family friendly bike fun begins with The Waldorf School of Philadelphia’s Ode to JoyRide on Oct. 20th — a 9 mile family biking event with a five-and-under special trike ride too. Then keep your bikes ready to roll on downtown for the annual Philly Bike Expo on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27th and 28th.
The two events have partnered to share the joy of bike riding with Philadelphia families.
Kids twelve and under get free admission to the Philly Bike Expo where youngsters can participate in a number of fun activities. They can try out pedal-powered fun on the indoor Pello Bikes test track. Little ones can participate in Kaspers Cargo’s large-scale arts & crafts project, and Eric Baar invites you to bring a favorite bike, helmet or accessory to his live pin-striping demonstration. And Cycle Scene PHL, presenters of some of Philly’s most memorable cycling happenings, will have some child-centered surprises.
At Ode to JoyRide, it’s all about the kids. At the event’s Trike Ride for Education, each child five-and-under gets a free bike decorating kit with registration, so that they can decorate their ride before navigating a fun-filled course of cones, flags, and hay bales. The larger family event is a relaxing ride that starts at the Waldorf School of Philadelphia’s campus on Saturday, October 20th, and cyclists bike on a family-friendly trail through Valley Green in the Wissahickon before returning to campus for live music and a BBQ celebration.
While children participating in the Ode to JoyRide family or trike cycle event must pay a small fee for the fun, they’re supporting a great cause! All proceeds from Ode to JoyRide go towards financial aid scholarships for Waldorf education.
The partnership between the two bike events is a first for Philly, but one that just makes sense for Philly Bike Expo Event Director, Bina Bilenky.
“We are excited to be sponsoring the Waldorf School’s Ode to JoyRide because children’s education in Philadelphia and all over the world is so very important. These children are the next generation of cyclists!”
Ode to Joy organizer, Alexandra Borders, is equally excited and says that many of the Waldorf School of Philadelphia’s students bike to school.
“Our community cares deeply about choosing a healthy outdoor lifestyle. Our sponsors, like Philly Bike Week, and our riders, have a significant impact on children’s lives by giving to this event where proceeds support children from low-income households with access to a Waldorf Education.”
