There are only four short months until we begin moving into our new home. Frank Furness’s historic buildings are being transformed into beautiful, light-filled, awe-inspiring spaces for our students. Experience the glorious restorative craftsmanship of local contractors, McCoubrey Overholser, during a New Home Tour at 10.00 a.m. on Sunday, March 29th.

Relocation planning is well under way to support a smooth transition beginning in June 2015.  Perhaps your child can be one of the first to experience this amazing space by joining our Summergarten program beginning July 6, 2015.

Along with site planning, scheduling, staffing, and budgeting we have been working diligently to develop a cohesive traffic flow plan for our new home.  This work included a small research project by seventh grade students. Seventh graders collected data on bused students, number of buses, number of cars parked, and the time frame for both drop-off and pick-up.  This data along with feedback collected from a parent transportation survey and results from surveying the area around 6000 Wayne Avenue provided the Leadership Team with important information for the development of the drop-off and pick-up route at our new home.

Based on the research we have developed the following picture of our current drop-off and pick-up routine.

7.30 a.m. Teachers and Staff Arrive
Before-care students arrive by bus and car
7.50 a.m. – 8.15 a.m. Grades students arrive by bus and car
The majority of students go to before-care or, once the doors open, go directly to their classrooms
8.00 a.m. – 8.45 a.m. Early Childhood students arrive by car and are escorted to their classrooms by parents and care-givers
Nursery and Parent Toddler students arrive. These parents park for 15 minutes to three hours, depending on the program
1.00 p.m. Early Childhood families collect half-day students
3.00 p.m. – 3.15 p.m. Busses arrive to collect grades students
The majority of the remaining students are collected by car

New Drop-off and Pick-up Schedule for 2015-2016

Arrival and Drop-Off

-7.30 a.m. A before-care teacher will be stationed at Great Hall.  There will be a staff person stationed at the gate on Harvey Street from 7.30 a.m. until the last bus arrives.  Busses are to come down Harvey Street, drop off at the gate and drive on.  Students will be sent to Great Hall or to their class if the doors have been opened.

-7.30 a.m. Another staff person will be located at the loading zone along Wayne Avenue.  This person will receive children by car-drop offs and send them back to before-care or classes if the doors are open. They will also ensure there is no parking in the loading zone.

– 8.00 a.m. The building doors will open and students will go to their classrooms or teachers will come down to meet younger classes. This detail will be worked out by faculty as needed and communicated to parents via class teachers.

-Grades parents who need to park will be asked to do so in the 5900 block of Wayne Avenue, the lower blocks of Harvey Street, or the block of Harvey or Walnut Lane above Wayne Ave. Otherwise grades parents will be asked to pull up and drop students in an efficient manner.

-Early Childhood parents will be asked to find temporary parking in the block of Wayne Avenue across from the school, along the block of Walnut Lane below Wayne Avenue. Nursery and Parent Tot along the top end of Harvey Street before Wayne Avenue.  There are often other spaces available on the adjacent blocks but we will ask other parents to be mindful to leave these closest spaces open for Early Childhood families who have to escort students.

-Teachers and Staff will be asked to park on the lower part of Harvey Street or on spots at the adjacent blocks of Wayne Avenue or Walnut Lane, being mindful to leave the closest spots open for other parking needs.

Dismissal and Pick-up

– 2.45 p.m. – 3.15 p.m. Early Childhood Dismissal – Families will be instructed to find short-term parking as in the mornings and can arrive at any time during this 30 minute period to pick up.  Lengthening the pick-up window will support Early Childhood families and help to reduce the congestion of traffic along Wayne Avenue.

– 3.10 p.m. Bus Student Dismissal – Bused students will be released from their classes and walk to the front loading zone where a staff member will oversee bus pick-up.

-3.20 p.m. Grades Dismissal –  Classes will proceed to the loading zone and stand in class groups under the supervision of their class teacher.  Cars will proceed up Wayne Avenue and form a pick-up line. Drivers will have a placard color-coded to the grades of students they are picking up. A staff person or two will keep things flowing and parents will be instructed not to park or get out of their car at this time but pick up and drive off once students are buckled.

– Parents who need to park will be instructed to do so in the same places that parking is available to them in the morning.

We hope that you will embrace this exciting move with us as we become a truly urban Waldorf School in the great city of Philadelphia.  We expect that our proposed drop-off and pick-up schedule will create questions for some families. Please know that your questions are welcomed and you can reach me and my leadership colleagues at any time.

I look forward to hearing your feedback.
