Our new Germantown address is bringing us closer to our ideal of providing an authentic urban Waldorf experience, a rarity among Waldorf schools. It will also place us in a more accessible location for Philadelphia area families – from Fishtown and South Philly to Overbrook Park and Wynnefield.
The renovation of our new home is on track for September 2015. The external painting of trim and doors, pointing of walls, and pouring concrete for steps and access ramps is being completed. Work also continues inside with walls being prepared for painting and systems in place.
During this re-building process, we have been diligently working to plan for energy efficiency and sustainability, as much as is possible. We have made great strides with insulation and energy efficiency, especially given these are historic breezy buildings. All of the buildings have new spray foam insulation throughout and windows have either been replaced or refurbished to help conserve heat and air-conditioning. We are applying for a PECO Smart Construction Incentive Program and PGW Efficient Construction Grant Program that value the energy efficient HVAC systems we will use in the new buildings.
With all this energy efficiency we have not forgotten to plan for recycling centers that have designated areas for composting to sustain our gardens. The sustainability committee is working on these new, long-awaited developments.
Our new home is really taking shape. I look forward to meeting many prospective new families at the site this weekend for the first in a series of New Home Tours, and I look forward to seeing many community members at the Town Hall Meeting on December 8th.
