Native American Heritage / Indigenous Peoples Month

As we embrace Native American Heritage and Indigenous Peoples Month, we are delighted to share a meaningful poem with our community. Our 4th Grade class has been studying and practicing "My Heart Soars" by Chief Dan George. They look forward to sharing this beautiful and inspiring poem with the entire school community during our Monday morning assembly. A revered leader and enduring voice of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation—a Coastal Salish band from what is now the southeast region of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada—Chief Dan George’s words continue to inspire and resonate across generations.

The beauty of the trees,
the softness of the air,
the fragrance of the grass,
speaks to me.

The summit of the mountain,
the thunder of the sky,
the rhythm of the sea,
speaks to me.

The faintness of the stars,
the freshness of the morning,
the dew drop on the flower,
speaks to me.

The strength of fire,
the taste of salmon,
the trail of the sun,
And the life that never goes away,
They speak to me.
And my heart soars

We also want to highlight the website of our local Indigenous community, the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania. Their events page features numerous opportunities to engage with and learn about Lenape cultural traditions through local events and activities. Additionally, their website provides valuable insights into their ongoing efforts to gain official recognition from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and ways you can support this important work.
