Kenya Mitchell

Early Childhood Lead Teacher, Lilac

Before she began her journey as a Waldorf educator in 2020, Kenya educated her own children during their early childhood years. While growing up herself, Kenya was given the space to explore nature and play without much interruption, and she made a concerted effort to provide that opportunity for her children and to prioritize this important aspect of development in her work with children in the Early Childhood classrooms at Philly Waldorf. She prioritizes creating a daily rhythm of play, listening to the sounds of nature, engaging in deliberate meal preparation, meeting new friends, and embracing the pure joy and magic of childhood and the beauty of the world. She believes in the the importance of allowing a child the space to view the world using all of their senses and their own imagination to facilitate dicovery.

Kenya has been an assistant teacher in the Waldorf School of Philadelphia’s Early Childhood program for the past five years. She has been an integral part of the Before and After Care programs as well as leading Philly Waldorf Summer Camp programs for various age groups.

When not at school, Kenya enjoys long hikes with her children, reading, sewing/knitting, cooking and learning about gardening. Currently enrolled at the Sunbridge Institute, Kenya will graduate with a certificate in Waldorf Early Childhood Education in July 2027.
