Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is unique among heritage months in that it doesn't start and end within the same month. Instead, it begins on September 15th to honor the independence days of several Latin American countries and ends on October 15th.
There are many beautiful ways to celebrate Hispanic heritage, the unique cultures of Latin America, and Latino/a/x and Hispanic people across the world. One way to learn is through food. In addition to engaging the Spanish language, as our Grades students do daily in their Spanish block with Maestra Elena, we can also read, support local businesses, and/or try recipes by and in support of Latino/a/x and Hispanic people and their heritage.
A fun recipe to try could be: Tres Leches Cake! It’s a delicious dessert with origins in Mexico and Nicaragua, whose recipe calls for using whole, evaporated, and condensed milk. Try a recipe like the one from Mexico In My Kitchen at home, and let us know what you think. If you aren't able to make it at home, 6th Grade student Magdelena recommends that everyone try going to Nora's Kitchen in South Philly for their delicious Tres Leches Cake, served with strawberries. (She also highly recommends ordering the hardshell tacos and plantains.)
